EU Aims to Expand Cooperation with Armenia

(MENAFN) The European Union announced Tuesday a sweeping expansion of its partnership with Armenia, launching new initiatives spanning transport infrastructure, energy security, and hybrid threat defense during the inaugural EU-Armenia summit held in Yerevan.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signaled readiness to invest in Armenia's physical connectivity with its neighbors. "We are ready to work on rebuilding border crossing points as your frontiers reopen with neighboring countries," she said.

Von der Leyen confirmed the signing of a connectivity partnership designed to strengthen transport links and integrate Armenia into key regional corridors, including the Trans-Caspian route. On energy, she said the EU is actively backing Armenia's push to diversify its energy sources and reinforce long-term supply security.

"This already includes €25 million (nearly $27 million) for the Caucasus transmission networks and investment in energy storage for your security of supply," she stressed.

In the security domain, von der Leyen announced a new EU partnership mission focused on helping Armenia counter hybrid threats, foreign interference, and disinformation, complemented by additional support channeled through the European Peace Facility.

"We are supporting you in countering these hybrid threats and disinformation," she underscored.

Von der Leyen also identified visa liberalization as a shared priority for both parties, and revealed a forthcoming arrangement with Frontex to enhance border management and migration cooperation.

European Council President Antonio Costa described the summit as an "important milestone" in EU-Armenia relations, voicing support for Yerevan's reform agenda. He said expanded cooperation across transport, energy, and digital infrastructure would generate trust, stimulate economic development, and reinforce regional stability.

Costa further remarked that Armenia is evolving into a "hub of connectivity between Europe and Asia."

On a separate matter, when pressed on the state of EU-US trade relations, von der Leyen offered a measured response, indicating that both sides are honoring existing commitments as final details of ongoing arrangements are concluded.
