Turkish Ambassador Commends Serbia for Blocking FETO
“Fighting terrorism is a shared responsibility of all states,” Saygili said during a commemoration in Belgrade marking the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Turkish ambassador Ahmet Galip Balkar.
Balkar was killed in 1983 during an armed attack carried out by the Armenian militant group, the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA). Saygili noted that Türkiye has faced numerous attacks by terrorist organizations, and that ASALA militants were responsible for the deaths of 31 Turkish diplomats and family members abroad.
“We are grateful to Serbia for its support in the fight against terrorist organizations. Serbia is a country in the Balkans that has not allowed the terrorist organization FETO to find refuge on its territory,” he added.
The ceremony took place at a monument in Belgrade’s Tasmajdan Park dedicated to Balkar and was attended by diplomats, Serbian Foreign Ministry official Dragan Petrovic, and other representatives. Participants also paid tribute to Serbian student Zeljko Milivojevic, who was killed trying to stop the attackers, as well as to a retired colonel and the ambassador’s driver, who were seriously injured.
Balkar was attacked while traveling to a meeting in Belgrade when gunmen opened fire on his car at a traffic light on what was then General Zhdanov Street, now Resavska Street. He succumbed to his injuries two days later.
