US, Armenia establish framework of strategic transit corridor

(MENAFN) The United States and Armenia have agreed on a framework to implement a strategic transit corridor aimed at enhancing regional trade, following commitments made during the White House Peace Summit in August.

The announcement came after a meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan at the State Department, where officials discussed progress on the corridor and broader bilateral cooperation.

The project, named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), is designed to connect mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through southern Armenia. The agreement was originally signed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and US President Donald Trump.

Under the framework, a new entity, the TRIPP Development Company, will oversee the corridor’s infrastructure, including rail, road, energy, and digital systems. The US will hold a majority stake initially, with Armenia maintaining oversight of reserve matters. The initial development rights will span 49 years, with the possibility of a 50-year extension that would increase Armenia’s equity share to 49%.

Armenia will retain full sovereignty over all project areas, enforcing its laws and regulations according to domestic and international rules.

Rubio emphasized that the corridor is designed to foster economic growth in Armenia “in a way that doesn’t in any way infringe upon the sovereignty of Armenia.”
