Estonian FM highlights Turkey’s role in regional stability

(MENAFN) Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized Türkiye’s importance as “a very important and very strong strategic partner on security and policy levels,” highlighting the deepening cooperation between the two nations in multiple areas.

Speaking on bilateral relations, regional security, and global conflicts, Tsahkna noted that Estonia and Türkiye have long maintained excellent ties, which continue to strengthen. He stressed Türkiye’s role in both security and political spheres, adding that its climate attracts Estonian families, especially during harsh winters at home.

Economic cooperation is also expanding alongside defense ties. Tsahkna pointed out that Turkish fighter jets will participate in the Baltic Air Policing mission again next year and described Ankara as “one of the largest defense procurement partners” for Estonia. He suggested that further collaboration in the defense industry is on the horizon, noting, “We have maybe something new on the defense industry level. Because Estonia is buying lots of military equipment from Türkiye. Türkiye is a very reliable partner as well.”

As NATO allies, the two countries coordinate closely, with Tsahkna observing that Türkiye “plays a very important role in stabilizing the situation in the region.” He highlighted Ankara’s support for peace and stability between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as its involvement in strategic trade corridors. Cooperation extends beyond bilateral relations, also taking place within European frameworks and other regional platforms.

Regarding the Gaza conflict, Tsahkna described the situation as a “humanitarian catastrophe,” expressing concern over the ceasefire’s fragility and the challenges in delivering aid. He underlined Estonia’s backing for humanitarian corridors and noted assistance provided through UN agencies, stating, “It is really hard to deliver any kind of humanitarian support. We are deeply concerned about Gaza and the Palestinian people who are suffering there.”

Tsahkna also discussed Türkiye’s role in the Russia-Ukraine war, highlighting Ankara’s dialogue with the United States and its strategic position within NATO. He referenced a recent alleged violation of Estonian airspace by Russian jets and reiterated Türkiye’s active support in NATO consultations, including next year’s Air Policing mission. He also stressed that Türkiye should be included in European defense programs, saying, “Europe has different programs, such as SAFE (European Security Action Program). So, the Estonian position has been very clear that Türkiye must be part of these programs. For Europe, but also for Ukraine.”

Finally, Tsahkna noted Estonia’s advocacy for the use of frozen Russian assets, totaling more than €200 billion, to support Ukraine, adding that these resources should also be accessible to Türkiye for related military support or investment efforts. He concluded by reaffirming Estonia’s commitment to Türkiye, describing his country as Türkiye’s “best friend.”
